Where in New Abirem? Volunteer opportunities

Mission:

I was selected for this trip because of the growing need in this region of Ghana to develop expertise in basic reconstructive surgery such as skin grafting and wound care. One of my objectives was to train local health care providers how to do skin grafts. In addition, I am a certified Medicare surgery center inspector. I was asked to provide insights into the development of a reliable functional operating room and recovery area. Areas equipped and suitable for patient care and for future surgical specialists to come in, and teach local healthcare professionals.

Background:

New Abirem Government Hospital was upgraded from a medical clinic to a hospital approximately 2years ago. During this two-year interim, much has been accomplished regarding infrastructure improvements and overall expansion. Very noteworthy are the contributions made by the Newmont Mining Corporation, New Abirem Mining Project Division. These contributions include the onsite new construction of male, female and obstetrical wards, donation of a large capacity generator for back up electrical support, and currently a borehole (a water well and pump) is being constructed to provide supplemental water to the property.  Nonprofit: Wounded Bird Human Health Services, Inc

  • Mission Statement: To establish Sustainable Burn and Wound Care Facilities and Services for Underserved Populations Worldwide.
  • Vision Statement: Modern Accessible Wound Care for Everybody Everywhere.
  • Why the name Wounded Bird?  “Because even a child wants to help a wounded bird…and see it fly again”.  Birds symbolize peace, transformation, freedom, and power. Our world would not be the same without them.
